A village property with a large romantic garden 75 minutes from Geneva and Lyon in the Lower Bugey region. Valromey is a valley in the hilly Bugey region to the south of the Jura mountains. On the other side of the Rhône is the French department of Savoy. This property stands in a delightful little village, very near to a medium-sized town, between vines and wild lakes. Nearby are the Lavours Marsh Nature Reserve and the vine-growing hills around the edges of Bourget lake. All shops are to be found in the neighbouring town as well as primary and secondary schools (15 minutes from a sixth form college with a school bus service). 10 minutes from an SNCF train station with direct links to Geneva and Lyon. The subprefecture of Belley, birthplace of Brillat-Savarin, is 15 minutes away, Aix-les Bains is 35 minutes away, Geneva and its international airport is just an hour away and Lyon is 75 minutes away. The Lower Bugey region was occupied by Man very early on as was proved by numerous archaeological excavations. Stone Age tools have been found there. It was crossed by Roman ways. Many landmark buildings, such as abbeys, episcopal palaces, fortresses and castles, bear witness to a wealth of history. This impressive village house is itself representative of said past. As of the 18th century, it belonged to leading local families. A famous, 19th century utopian, a founding father of a powerful philosophical-literary way of thinking belonged to one of said families. This was the place he chose to write a good part of his work. This house is in the centre of the village, facing the church. Its flat grounds, spanning almost 2,000 m of lawns and verdant foliage, are surrounded by a low wall around virtually the entire perimeter. These grounds comprise an old well, which has water all year round. This property is reached via a short dirt track, leading to wooden gates topped with a canopy.
The main houseThis building is a dressed stone fortress dating from the 15th century. Its main level, spanning approx. 200 m² of living space, is reached on the garden level via the facade entrance or via that providing access to the reception rooms and opening directly on to the garden. The large openings bring to mind all the possible transformations that could have taken place in the 18th century.
The recently renovated lower level spans approx. 150 m². It comprises two large bedrooms, a shower room, a toilet and cellars.
A large area in use as attic space tops the entire residence. Its superb roofing framework and high ceiling inspire ideas and desires for conversion.
It is a robust construction. The carcass is in a good state of repair courtesy of its retaining walls which are more than 60 cm thick. The roof was renovated fairly recently. The inside is, however, in need of some attention: bathroom and toilet facilities, wall rendering, ceilings, etc. The barnAt a distance from the main house is a 90 m² stone building. It is currently in use as a garage and as storage space. It spans two levels. The garden level ceiling features cross-ribbed vaults. The old dovecoteA small old building in the shade of the woods, probably once a dovecote, enhances the romantic character of these premises.
